Comprometido has two sharply different meanings. In a positive sense it means 'committed' or 'engaged' (un activista comprometido = 'a committed activist'). In a negative sense it means 'compromised' or 'in a difficult position' (una situación comprometida = 'an awkward situation'). Also, estar comprometido/a means 'to be engaged to be married'.
