Compatriota is a common-gender noun — el/la compatriota — so the article alone signals the sex of the referent; the word itself does not change form. It is used in formal, journalistic, and political contexts to refer to a fellow citizen of the same country. In colloquial speech paisano/paisana is a more relaxed synonym.
