coger

to take, to grab

verb koh-HEHR Less Common

Also means

to catch

Usage Note

Coger is the standard verb for 'to take' or 'to catch' in Spain (coger el autobús, coger un taxi), but it is strongly vulgar in Mexico, Argentina, and much of Latin America due to a sexual connotation. Latin American speakers use tomar, agarrar, or pillar instead. Learners should know the register split before using it.

Examples

"Tengo que coger el tren de las ocho."

Natural Translation

I have to catch the eight o'clock train.
