Usage Note

Codificar is a regular -ar verb with a spelling change: the c becomes qu before e in the subjunctive and preterite (codifiqué, codifique). In computing it means to encode data; in law it means to compile laws into a code (codificar las leyes). Learners should not confuse it with decodificar (to decode) or cifrar (to encrypt specifically).
