Cocinar is the general verb for cooking, whether on the stovetop, in the oven, or on a grill. The agent noun cocinero/cocinera (cook, chef) derives from it. The related noun cocina means both 'kitchen' and 'cuisine' — la cocina de mi abuela can mean both 'my grandmother's kitchen' and 'my grandmother's cooking style'.
