Clarificar is used both in abstract contexts ('to clarify a situation') and in culinary/technical ones ('to clarify butter or broth'). It is a -car verb, so the first-person preterite is clarifiqué (spelling change to preserve the /k/ sound). Aclarar is a close synonym but more common in everyday speech.
