Usage Note

Civilización refers to a civilisation as a cultural or historical entity (la civilización maya) as well as the abstract idea of being civilised. The verb civilizar and the adjective civilizado share the root. Under SESEO the -z- and -c- of civilización are both pronounced 's'.
