Usage Note

Chocolate is masculine in Spanish. Beyond the sweet, chocolate in Spain informally refers to hashish in slang contexts, so register matters. Una tableta de chocolate ('a chocolate bar') and una taza de chocolate ('a cup of hot chocolate') are standard collocations. Hot chocolate in Spain (chocolate a la taza) is notably thick compared to the thin cocoa drink common elsewhere.
