cesta

basket

noun SEH-stah Rare

Origin: From Latin cista, 'box, basket', from Greek kistē.

Usage Note

Cesta is a woven basket, typically with a handle, used for shopping or carrying goods. It differs from cesto, the masculine form, which tends to denote a larger, deeper basket or wastepaper bin. In the Basque sport of jai alai, the cesta is also the curved wicker scoop attached to the player's arm.
