Usage Note
Catastrófico is the formal register adjective; the noun is catástrofe (f). It intensifies well with absolutamente catastrófico but learners should note it is never shortened colloquially the way English 'catastrophic' sometimes is. In Latin America desastroso is equally common.
Examples
"Las inundaciones tuvieron un efecto catastrófico."
Natural Translation
The floods had a catastrophic effect.
