Casona is an augmentative of casa and refers specifically to a large, old, imposing house — often with colonial or historical connotations in Latin America. Unlike a mansión (mansion, modern or grand), a casona carries a sense of age and solidity. In Chile and Peru the word often evokes a colonial-era dwelling.
