Usage Note
Avanzar covers both literal movement forward and figurative progress: avanzar en la carrera (to advance in one's career). The opposite is retroceder. Note that the -zar ending triggers a spelling change in the preterite first person: avancé, not avanzé, to preserve the soft 's' sound before e.
