Asfixiante is the present-participle adjective of asfixiar (to asphyxiate/suffocate) and is invariable for gender: calor asfixiante (stifling heat), gases asfixiantes (asphyxiating gases). It is commonly used both literally (lack of oxygen) and figuratively (an overwhelming or oppressive situation). The noun is asfixia (f).
