Aproximadamente is the formal equivalent of más o menos (more or less) and is preferred in written, technical, or official contexts: aproximadamente dos millones de personas. Alrededor de (around) is another common alternative in speech. The word is long but predictably derived from aproximado + -mente, so learners who know the adjective can build it logically.
