Apreciar covers both emotional appreciation (aprecio tu ayuda, I appreciate your help) and visual or sensory perception (se puede apreciar el detalle, you can make out the detail). The related noun aprecio means 'esteem' or 'appreciation'. It does not carry the English sense of 'to increase in value'; for that, use revalorizarse.
