Usage Note

Aplacar is a regular -ar verb whose stem changes to aplaque in the present subjunctive and formal imperative (a -car spelling-change verb). It typically takes a person, an emotion, or an angry reaction as its object ('aplacar la ira', 'aplacar a la multitud'). A near synonym is calmar, which is more neutral; aplacar implies defusing something that was actively threatening.
