aparentar

to pretend

verb ah-pah-ren-TAHR Rare

Also means

to seem

Usage Note

Aparentar means to give the appearance of something that may not be true — aparenta tener cuarenta años (he looks about forty, though he may not be). It is close to parecer but stronger in implying a conscious or deceptive display. Do not confuse with aparecer (to appear/show up), which is unrelated in meaning despite the similar form.

Examples

"Intenta aparentar calma aunque está nervioso."

Natural Translation

He tries to appear calm even though he is nervous.
