Origin: From Greek anaimia (bloodlessness), from an- (without) + haima (blood).

Usage Note

Anemia (the Academy-preferred spelling, without the diaeresis) is the medical condition of insufficient healthy red blood cells. It is feminine despite ending in -a, as expected, but learners sometimes confuse it with anémico (the adjective). In Latin America the accent-free spelling anemia is universal; the older anæmia form is not used in Spanish.
