amenazar

to threaten

verb ah-meh-nah-SAHR Less Common

Usage Note

Amenazar follows the spelling-change rule for -zar verbs: the z changes to c before e (amenacé, not amenazé). It takes con + infinitive when describing the content of a threat (amenazó con renunciar, 'he threatened to resign') or con + noun (amenazar con violencia). The noun amenaza ('threat') is frequently used in political and security contexts.

Examples
