Usage Note

Alternativa is a feminine noun meaning a choice between two (or more) options. In bullfighting, la alternativa is the formal ceremony that promotes a novice to full matador — a culturally specific usage. In everyday speech, no hay alternativa ('there is no alternative') is a common fixed phrase. The adjective form alternativo (alternative, unconventional) also exists.
