almacén

warehouse

noun ahl-mah-SEN Less Common

Origin: From Arabic al-majzen (storehouse, treasury).

Also means

department store

Usage Note

Almacén has two common meanings: a large storage warehouse, and (especially in Latin America) a general store or small supermarket. In Spain, grandes almacenes means 'department stores'. The plural almacenes is regular, but note the accent drops (almacénalmacenes) as stress naturally falls on the penultimate syllable.

Examples

"Guardaron la mercancía en el almacén."

Natural Translation

They stored the merchandise in the warehouse.
