Alfabetización refers to the process of teaching reading and writing — 'literacy' or 'literacy education'. It is not simply 'the alphabet' (el alfabeto). Phrases like campaña de alfabetización ('literacy campaign') and tasa de alfabetización ('literacy rate') are common in social and political discourse. The verb form is alfabetizar.
