Alertado is the past participle of alertar used adjectivally, and it agrees in gender and number with the noun it modifies (alertada, alertados, alertadas). It implies that someone has been actively notified of a danger, slightly stronger than merely 'aware'. In news writing it often follows estar: las autoridades estaban alertadas — the authorities had been put on alert.
