Advertir is an -ir stem-changing verb (e→ie/i): advierto, adviertes… Its primary meaning is 'to warn' or 'to caution' (te advierto que llegará tarde = 'I'm warning you he'll be late'), but it also means 'to notice' or 'to realise' (advertí un error = 'I noticed a mistake'). The noun advertencia ('warning') shares the same root.
