Adjudicar is used in formal and legal contexts — awarding a contract (adjudicar un contrato), granting a prize, or assigning property. The reflexive adjudicarse means 'to claim for oneself' or 'to win' (se adjudicó el primer premio = 'she won first prize'). It is more formal than conceder or dar.
