Origin: From Spanish a Dios, literally 'to God', a farewell commending someone to God's care.

Usage Note

Adiós is a definitive farewell implying a longer or permanent separation, unlike hasta luego or chao for casual partings. In rural Spain it can also serve as a brief greeting called out when passing someone in the street. The written accent on the o marks the stress on the final syllable.
