Usage Note
Adelantado can mean ahead of schedule (llegó adelantado — he arrived early), advanced in development, or precocious. Historically it also referred to a Spanish colonial governor (adelantado), a sense still encountered in historical texts. As an adjective it agrees with the noun it modifies and has no inherent gender.
