Usage Note

Yate entered Spanish from Dutch via English and is used for both sailing and motor yachts. It is always masculine. The word retains the 'y' spelling because Spanish adopted it through English phonetics; compare yudo (judo) and yogur (yogurt) for the same convention. The plural is the regular yates.
