vísperas

eve; vespers

noun BEES-peh-rahs Rare

Origin: From Latin 'vespera' (evening).

Usage Note

Vísperas is most commonly used in the plural in the phrase en vísperas de (on the eve of), which marks proximity to an important event — en vísperas de las elecciones (on the eve of the elections). In a religious context vísperas (Vespers) refers to the evening canonical hour of prayer. The singular víspera exists but the plural dominates.
