viaduct

noun byah-DOOK-toh Rare

Origin: From Latin viaductus, from via (road) + ducere (to lead)

Usage Note

Viaducto describes a long bridge-like structure carrying a road or railway over a valley or other obstacle. Famous examples give the word cultural weight: Madrid's Viaducto de Segovia is iconic. Do not confuse with acueducto (aqueduct), which carries water.

Natural Translation

The train crossed the viaduct at high speed.
