tumbar

to knock down, to topple

verb toom-BAHR Rare

Also means

to lie down

Usage Note

Tumbar means to knock something or someone over: a punch can tumbar a fighter, wind can tumbar a tree. Reflexively, tumbarse means to lie down or stretch out — very common in informal speech for taking a nap: me voy a tumbar un rato (I'm going to lie down for a bit). This reflexive sense is more colloquial than acostarse.

Examples

"El viento tumbó varios árboles del parque."

Natural Translation

The wind knocked down several trees in the park.
