Usage Note

Tropa is often used in the plural tropas when referring to military forces (las tropas avanzaron). In the singular it can refer collectively to ordinary soldiers as distinct from officers (la tropa, 'the rank and file'). In informal Latin American speech, la tropa can also mean 'the gang' or 'the crew' in a playful sense.
