Usage Note

Transcurrir specifically describes time passing or an event unfolding over a period (los años transcurren rápido = 'the years pass quickly'). It is more formal and literary than pasar, and is almost exclusively used with a time subject. An alternative spelling trascurrir (one s) is accepted by the RAE but less common. The noun is transcurso (en el transcurso de = 'in the course of').
