Usage Note

Tonto functions as both a noun (el tonto, 'the fool') and an adjective (un comentario tonto, 'a silly remark'). The feminine is tonta. Paired with hacerse el tonto it means 'to play dumb.' It is informal but not vulgar; stronger equivalents exist. No seas tonto ('don't be an idiot') is a common mild rebuke.
