Usage Note

Tirar covers both 'to throw' and 'to pull', which are opposites in English — context disambiguates. Signs on doors read tirar (pull) versus empujar (push). The reflexive tirarse can mean to throw oneself, to dive, or colloquially to spend time (me tiré dos horas esperando: 'I spent two hours waiting').
