tiempo

time

noun TYEM-poh Common

Origin: From Latin tempus.

Also means

weather

Usage Note

Tiempo covers both 'time' in the abstract (no tengo tiempo — I don't have time) and 'weather' (hace buen tiempo — the weather is good). Context usually disambiguates, but learners must resist using hora (clock time/hour) interchangeably. A tiempo means 'on time'; a veces means 'sometimes' (not a tiempos). For asking the time use ¿Qué hora es?, not ¿Qué tiempo es?.

Examples

"No tengo tiempo para salir hoy."

Natural Translation

I don't have time to go out today.

Literal Translation

Not I-have time to-go-out today
