Terminar can be transitive (terminé el trabajo, 'I finished the work') or intransitive (la película terminó, 'the film ended'). The construction terminar de + infinitive means 'to finish doing': terminé de leer el libro. Terminar por + infinitive means 'to end up doing': terminó por aceptar.
