Tablero covers several flat-surface meanings: a game board (tablero de ajedrez 'chessboard'), a school blackboard, a car dashboard (tablero de mandos), or a workbench panel. Tablero de mandos is the standard term in many Latin American countries for what Spain often calls salpicadero. The root is tabla ('plank').
