Usage Note

Arca means a large wooden chest or coffer (arca del tesoro) and is also used in the Biblical sense (arca de Noé — Noah's ark). Despite beginning with a-, arca is feminine — but it takes the masculine article el in the singular when immediately adjacent (el arca, like el agua) to avoid the hiatus. In the plural, las arcas is standard.
