Surgir is intransitive — subjects emerge on their own; you cannot surgir something. It is the go-to verb for unexpected or spontaneous appearances: problems, ideas, or opportunities that 'come up'. Conjugation note: like dirigir, the first-person present is surjo (not surgo).
