Usage Note

Sur is one of the four cardinal directions (norte, sur, este, oeste). Unlike in English, the compass points in Spanish are not capitalised unless they form part of a proper name. El sur often refers to the southern part of a country (el sur de España). The adjective form is sureño/a (southern, southerner).
