Sumido is the past participle of sumir used adjectivally, nearly always followed by en (sumido en la pobreza, sumido en el caos). It conveys being deeply engulfed or overwhelmed by a state. The construction is more literary and formal than everyday metido en or hundido en, and it does not imply the subject's own action.
