sujetar

to hold

verb soo-heh-TAHR Rare

Origin: From Latin subiectare (to subject, to throw under), frequentative of subicere.

Also means

to fasten

Usage Note

Sujetar means to hold in place, grip, or fasten something so it does not move (sujetar la puerta, sujetar el pelo con una pinza). The reflexive sujetarse means to hold on (sujétate bien). The related adjective sujeto (a) also means 'subject to' (sujeto a cambios — subject to changes), functioning as a false-friend trap for English speakers.
