Origin: From Latin sui (of oneself) + caedere (to kill).
Usage Note
Suicida is invariable for gender as an adjective (el acto suicida, la conducta suicida) and as a noun can refer to a person who has attempted or died by suicide. By extension it describes reckless, self-destructive behaviour — una maniobra suicida (a suicidal manoeuvre). The act itself is suicidio, and the verb is suicidarse.
