Suerte covers both 'luck' and 'fate' or 'lot in life'. The greeting ¡buena suerte! (good luck) is ubiquitous, and ¡qué suerte! expresses envy at someone's fortune. Probar suerte means 'to try one's luck'. It can also mean a type or sort in literary register — toda suerte de (all manner of) — though this usage is formal.
