subyacer
to underlie; to be beneath
verb soob-yah-SEHR Rare
Origin: Latin subiaccre (to lie under).
Usage Note
Subyacer is an irregular verb patterned on yacer: present tense subyace (3rd sg.), subjunctive subyazca. It is almost exclusively used in formal, academic, or analytical prose to describe something that exists beneath a surface or within a deeper layer ('el problema que subyace'). The related adjective subyacente ('underlying') is far more common than the verb itself.
Examples
"Un profundo malestar subyace en la sociedad."
Natural Translation
A deep malaise underlies society.
