Usage Note
Sorprendentemente is one of the longer Spanish adverbs in -mente, formed from the adjective sorprendente. It is typically placed at the start of a clause as a sentence adverb (Sorprendentemente, llegó a tiempo) or after the verb for emphasis. As with all -mente adverbs, it drops its suffix when coordinated with another: sorprendente e increíblemente.
