Usage Note

Socorrista is a common-gender noun — el socorrista or la socorrista depending on sex. It refers to a lifeguard at a pool or beach, or to a first-aid responder in emergencies. The root is socorro (help, aid). In Spain socorrista is the standard term for pool/beach lifeguard; in some Latin American countries salvavidas is preferred.
