Sociedad means 'society' in the broad sense (la sociedad moderna) but also a legal company or partnership: sociedad anónima (S.A.) is the equivalent of a limited company or corporation, and sociedad de responsabilidad limitada (S.R.L. / S.L.) is a private limited company. Do not confuse the corporate sense with empresa (a general business).
