soberbia
arrogance
noun soh-BEHR-byah Rare
Origin: From Latin superbia, from superbus (proud, haughty).
Also means
pride
Usage Note
Soberbia carries a stronger moral weight than orgullo (pride), shading into sinful or excessive hubris — it is one of the seven deadly sins (los siete pecados capitales). In everyday speech it can also be used as an adjective meaning 'magnificent' (una soberbia actuación — a magnificent performance), though that sense is more formal. The noun is always feminine.
Examples
"Su soberbia le impidió pedir ayuda."
Natural Translation
His arrogance prevented him from asking for help.
